CALL FOR PAPERS
The Middleware conference is a forum for the discussion of important
innovations and recent advances in the design, implementation, deployment,
and usage of middleware. Middleware is a distributed-systems software that
resides between a rich variety of applications on the one hand, and the
underlying architecture on the other hand which may consist of the OS,
hardware, and network stacks or even databases, storage and different cloud
services. The goals of middleware include providing abstractions,
programmability, performance, scalability, security, and a variety of
essential features. This is a rapidly evolving and growing field.
Following the success of past conferences in this series, the 11th
International Middleware Conference will be the premier event for middleware
research and technology in 2010. The scope of the conference is the design,
implementation, deployment, and evaluation of distributed system platforms
and architectures for current and future computing, storage, and
communication environments. Highlights of the conference will include a high
quality technical program, invited speakers, an industrial track, poster and
demo presentations, a doctoral symposium, and workshops.

=========================
Industry Papers
The conference strongly encourages submission of industry-focused papers and
use case studies; full papers should be submitted to the main program, where
they will be reviewed using appropriate criteria (e.g. emphasizing
experience and system evolution), and accepted papers will be published in
the main conference proceedings. Additionally, short industry-focused papers
(10 pages, Springer LNCS style) may be submitted to a special industrial
track; accepted short papers will be presented at the conference and
published in the ACM Digital Library. Note that submissions to the main
program may indicate a willingness to be referred to the Industrial Track if
a paper is not accepted to the main program.
Big Ideas Papers
This year, we particularly encourage "big ideas papers"; that is papers that
have the potential for opening up new research directions. For such papers,
the potential to motivate new research is more important than full
experimental evaluation, though some preliminary evidence of the
effectiveness of the approach or idea is important. Authors should indicate
in the introduction that their paper is a vision of a big idea, rather than
more mature work. Such papers should clearly indicate why the idea is
revolutionary and not evolutionary; what the major questions still to be
answered are; and possible avenues of attack for the community to pursue
towards the development of the idea.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Distributed application technology has become a foundation of the information
society. New computing and communication technologies have brought up a
multitude of challenging application areas, including mobile computing,
inter-enterprise collaborations, ubiquitous services, service-oriented
architectures, autonomous and self-adapting systems, peer-to-peer systems,
just to name a few. New challenges include the need for novel abstractions
supporting the development, deployment, management and interoperability of
evolutionary and complex applications and services, such as those bridging the
physical/virtual worlds. Therefore, the linkage between applications,
platforms and users through multi-disciplinary user requirements (like
security, privacy, usability, efficiency, safety, semantic and pragmatic
interoperability of data and services, dependability, trust and
self-adaptivity) becomes of special interest. It is envisaged that future
complex applications will far exceed those of today in terms of these
requirements.
The DAIS conference series addresses all aspects of distributed applications,
including their design, implementation and operation, the supporting
middleware, appropriate software engineering methodologies and tools, as well
as experimental studies and practice reports. This time we welcome in
particular contributions on architectures, models, technologies and platforms

The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems
martes, 5 de enero de 2010
(MEDES 2010)
Description and Objectives
---------------------------
In the world of the Internet, the rapid growth and exponential use of digital
medias leads to the emergence of
virtual environments namely digital ecosystems composed of multiple and
independent entities such as individuals,
organizations, services, software and applications sharing one or several
missions and focusing on the interactions
and inter-relationships among them. The digital ecosystem exhibits
self-organizing environments, thanks to the
re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in which resources
provided by each entity are properly
conserved, managed and used. The underlying resources mainly comprehend data
management, innovative services,
computational intelligence and self-organizing platforms. Due to the
multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems
and their characteristics, they are highly complex to study and design. This
also leads to a poor understanding as to
how managing resources will empower digital ecosystems to be innovative and
value-creating. The application of Information
Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of how entities
request resources and ultimately interact to
create benefits and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge.
These technologies can be improved through
novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as data management,
web technologies, networking, security,
human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and
self-organizing systems to support the establishment
of digital ecosystems and manage their resources.
The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems
(MEDES) aims to develop and bring together
a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested
in exploring the manifold challenges
and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current
approaches and technologies can be
evolved and adapted to this end. The conference seeks related original research
papers, industrial papers and proposals
for demonstrations, and tutorials and workshops.

Onward! is a place for highly original ideas about how technological advances and new applications are going to shape computational fabrics of the future. Onward! is more radical, more visionary, and more open than other conferences to not so well proven but well argued ideas. We welcome different ways of thinking about, approaching, and reporting on programming languages and software engineering research. Onward! takes a broad and inclusive view of computation and seeks contributions from all fields represented at OOPSLA and other software conferences. Onward! particularly encourages contributions influenced by other disciplines such as art, philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology,
economics, communities, politics, ethics, or any other human endeavor.
Anything to do with programming and software can be submitted. Anything!
Onward! is innovative not only with regard to its topics and ideas but also to the contribution formats. This year, we seek high quality submissions in one of the following categories:
*** RESEARCH PAPERS (Due June 26, 2009) ***
While regular research papers tell what work has been done and validated in recent years, Onward! papers show what exciting work is being done right now. Onward! accepts papers that talk about innovative research work that is early in its life or is not in the mainstream. We request submissions of position papers that propose bold directions of research and advocate nontraditional methodologies. An Onward! paper does not need to contain a fully worked out theory or implemented system, but must be well-thought-out and compelling in its vision or uniqueness of thinking.
Papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published in the OOPSLA 2009 Proceedings, and will appear in the ACM Digital Library.
*** FILMS ***
Years ago, sophisticated software systems had to be constructed by highly trained programmers who understood the ins and outs of software development. Today, with the advent of new mashup technologies and service architectures, these barriers have been lowered. The goal of this track is to explore new developments in how film and other narrative multimedia technologies can be used to enrich the software development process. Descriptions of accepted films will be published in the OOPSLA 2009 Companion, and will appear in the ACM Digital Library.
*** ESSAYS (submission closed) ***
*** WORKSHOPS (submission closed) ***
*** HOW TO SUBMIT ***
Electronic submission is required through the Onward! homepage. Text submissions must follow the standard ACM SIGPLAN format. Research papers should not exceed 8 pages. Submissions must not have been previously published, and must not be concurrently submitted for publication elsewhere (including journals and formal proceedings of conferences and workshops). Violation of this policy will result in desk-rejection of the submission.

International Workshop on Interactive Multimedia for Consumer Electronics
martes, 9 de junio de 2009
International Workshop on
Interactive Multimedia for Consumer Electronics (IMCE'09)
Beijing, China, October 23, 2009
In conjunction with ACM Multimedia 2009
(http://www.hitech-projects.
With the development of silicon technologies, consumer electronics devices, such as personal computers, HDTV, mobile phones, digital cameras and game consoles, have become ubiquitous for people’s daily life. These devices can provide multimedia sources for entertainment, communication, and so on. To interact with these equipments, consumers currently rely on devices such as remote controls, keyboards or control panels, which are often inconvenient, ambiguous and non-interactive. How to design user interfaces of CE products that enable natural, intuitive and fun interaction is one of the main challenges the CE industry is facing. Many companies and institutes are working on the advanced user interfaces.
User interface technologies have been studied in various disciplines for decades. Considering that modern CE products are usually supplied with both microphones and cameras, how to employ both audio and visual information for interactive
multimedia has recently received much attention in both academia and industry. But interactive multimedia is still an under-explored field. Many challenges exist when moving to multimodal interaction: for example, how to annotate and search
huge data acquired by using multiple sensors, especially in the unconstrained end-user environments? how to effectively extract and select representative multimedia features for human behavior recognition? and how to select the fusion strategy of multimodal data for a given application? To address these challenges, we must adapt the existing approaches or find new solutions suitable for multimedia interaction.
This workshop will bring together researchers from both academia and industry in domains including computer vision, machine learning, audio and speech processing, communications, artificial intelligence and media technology to share and discuss recent advances in interactive user interfaces and multimedia applications.
Topics related to interactive multimedia for consumer electronics include, but are not limited to:
-- Multimedia description and markup
-- Multimedia representation and annotation
-- Multimedia search and retrieval
-- Presence and environment sensing
-- Face detection, recognition, and tracking
-- Hand detection, tracking, and recognition
-- Facial expression recognition
-- Emotion/mood recognition
-- Gesture/action/activity recognition
-- Audio-visual recognition and interaction
-- Novel interaction (accelerometer, touch screen, haptics, voice)
-- Multimodal data modeling and fusion

The ACM Multimedia Open-Source Software Competition celebrates the invaluable contribution of researchers and software developers who advance the field by providing the community with implementations of codecs, middleware, frameworks, toolkits, libraries, applications, and other multimedia software. This year will be the sixth year in running the competition as part of ACM Multimedia.
To qualify, software must be provided with source code and licensed in such a manner that it can be used free of charge in academic and research settings. For the competition, the software will be built from the sources. All source code, license, installation instructions and other documentation must be available on a public web page. Dependencies on non-open source third-party software are discouraged (with the exception of operating systems and commonly found commercial packages available free of charge). To encourage more diverse participation, previous years' non-winning entries are welcome to re-submit for the 2009 competition. Student-led efforts are particularly encouraged.
Authors are highly encouraged to prepare as much documentation as possible, including examples of how the provided software might be used, download statistics, other public usage information, etc. Entries will be peer-reviewed to select entries for inclusion in the conference program as well as an overall winning entry, to be recognized formally at ACM Multimedia 2009. The criteria for judging all submissions include broad applicability and potential impact, novelty, technical depth, demo suitability, and other miscellaneous factors
(e.g., maturity, popularity, student-led, no dependence on closed source).
Authors of the winning entry, and possibly additional selected entries, will be invited to demonstrate their software as part of the conference program. In addition, accepted overview papers will be included in the conference proceedings.

The 1st ACM Workshop on Multimedia in Forensics (MiFor09)
in conjunction with the 2009 ACM International Conference on Multimedia (ACM-MM)
Beijing Hotel, Beijing, China
October 23, 2009
With the proliferation of multimedia data on the web, surveillance cameras in cities, and mobile phones in everyday life we see an enormous growth in multimedia data that needs to be analyzed by forensic investigators. The sheer volume of such datasets makes manual inspection of all data impossible. Tools are needed to support the investigator in their quest for relevant clues and evidence and in their strive towards preventing crime.
The time is ripe to tailor results from the Multimedia field for forensics. *Motivation*
This workshop is dedicated to the debate of concepts, challenges, and opportunities concerning user-provided networking, i.e., scenarios where users cooperate by sharing wireless resources as well as Internet services.
To provide a specific example that relates to Internet Access (connectivity),
the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive in what concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between what is today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast, the Internet has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of network service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person communication, or information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also disruptive given that the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in order to accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth is the willingness to cooperate.
Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the nature of the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators needs to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking spreads
dynamically having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need to
consider cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed based
on topological information.
Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that such novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely autonomic way and also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based
upon his/her own mobility and social patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily imply the use of multihop technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases, simply relayed.
The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers and a discussion panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a
forum aiming to ignite a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or positively) that user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models.
*Topics*

The Requirements Engineering Track

CALL FOR PAPERS
The Requirements Engineering Track
http://www.dsc.upe.br/~sac2010
at The 25th Annual ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC 2010)
Sierre, Switzerland
March 22-26, 2010
------------
Overview
------------
For the past twenty-four years, the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) has been a primary gathering forum for applied computer scientists, computer engineers, software engineers, and application developers from around the world.
The Third Edition of the Requirements Engineering Track (RE-Track'10) is part of the 25th ACM Symposium on Applied Computing. SAC 2010 is hosted by University of Applied Sciences, Western Switzerland (HES-SO) and Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Further details may be found at: http://www.acm.org/conferences/sac/sac2010/.
Requirement Engineering is defined as the branch of Software Engineering concerned with the real-world goals for, functions of, and constraints on software systems; it is also concerned with the relationship of these factors to precise specifications of software behaviour and to their evolution over time and across software families. Requirements engineering is increasingly recognized as a critically important activity in any systems engineering process.
The arising of many complex software applications in many multidisciplinary domains, the speed with which they need to be developed, and the degree to which they are expected to change, all play a role in determining how the systems development process should be conducted. Independently of the nature of the software, the elicitation, analysis, negotiation, specification, validation and management of requirements are fundamental for the development of quality in complex software. Only by fully understanding stakeholders' needs, and documenting them in a concise, and unambiguous way, can consistently deliver quality products designed to meet the complexities of our advanced information society.
However, there area number of inherent difficulties in the RE process.
The existing methods for requirements specification are far from being completely satisfactory. Requirements must be measurable, testable, related to identified business and other field needs or opportunities, and defined to a level of detail sufficient for system design. The demand for better, faster, and more usable software systems will continue, and RE will therefore continue to evolve in order to deal with different development scenarios which must be considered. Besides that, many new areas are being investigated by requirements engineering community (such as: aspect-oriented or agents-oriented development, COTS-based systems, use of simulation techniques, autonomic system) to achieve better ways for leading with the involved complexity.
The objective of this track is to explore different advances in requirement
engineering in a general way, its relation with different areas, reducing the gap between software engineering solutions and the way one specific domain of knowledge was seen up to given point.
