=========================================

For many real-world vision and imaging problems, the available information is imprecise,
uncertain, and/or incomplete, making it difficult to solve these problems. Intelligent systems
have demonstrated that they are capable to exploit the tolerance for imprecision,
uncertainty, partial truth, and approximation to achieve tractability, robustness, lower cost
and better fit with reality. Consequently, the application of intelligent methodologies in
image processing and artificial vision has increased over the last few years with many
interesting approaches having been introduced. This special session aims to integrate state
of the art approaches applying intelligent systems to tackle image processing and artificial
vision problems.

1st International Workshop on: *INTERNET MULTIMEDIA MINING*

miércoles, 27 de mayo de 2009

1st International Workshop on:

*INTERNET MULTIMEDIA MINING*

(with dataset support)

http://research.microsoft.com/IMM2009/

In conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Data Mining 2009

December 6, Miami, Florida, USA

Aims and scopeWith the explosion of video and image data available on the Internet, online multimedia applications become more and more important. Moreover, mining semantics and other useful information from large-scale Internet multimedia data to facilitate online and local multimedia content analysis, search and other related applications has also gained more and more attention from both academia and industry. On the one hand, the rapid increase of online multimedia data brings new challenges to multimedia content analysis, multimedia retrieval and related multimedia applications, especially in scalability. Both computation cost and performance of many existing techniques are far from satisfactory. On the other hand, Internet also provides us with new opportunities to attack these challenges as well has conventional problems encountered in multimedia mining, content analysis, image/video understanding and computer vision. That is, the massive associated metadata, context and social information available on the Internet, as well as the massive grassroots Internet users, are invaluable resources that can be leveraged to solve the aforementioned difficulties.

Recently more and more researchers are realizing both the challenges and the opportunities for multimedia research brought by the Internet. This full-day workshop aims at bringing together high-quality and novel research works on "Internet Multimedia Mining".

One of the major obstacles of "Internet Multimedia Mining" research is the difficulty in forming a "good" dataset for algorithm developing, system prototyping and performanceevaluation. Together with this workshop, we release a benchmark dataset, which is based on real Internet multimedia data and real Internet multimedia search engines. Submissions to this workshop are encouraged to use this dataset, but papers/demos working on other Internet-based datasets are also welcome.

MSRA Multimedia Dataset

MSRA-MM Version 1 dataset is ready for shipping. Detailed information about the dataset can

be find at: http://research.microsoft.com/apps/pubs/default.aspx?id=79942. Please contact the

dataset chair (Meng Wang: mengwang@microsoft.com) to request the data.

MSRA-MM Version 2 dataset (10 times larger with more metadata) will be ready around June 15.

Please submit your request to the dataset chair.

Topics of Interest

Topics of interest for this workshop include, but are not limited to:

* Internet video/image/audio annotation, classification, tagging, search ranking and reranking by combining textual description and video/image content.

* General video/image/audio annotation, classification, tagging, search ranking and reranking by exploiting Internet data and/or users. Approaches which can handle large-scale data/users are more preferred.

* Video/image/audio processing and analyses using Internet data as a knowledge base.

* Social media processing, such as online media authoring and sharing, tag recommendation, tag filtering, tag ranking, and search ranking based on image/video/audio social context.

* Knowledge mining from Internet multimedia data, such as mining semantic distance of keywords or images, mining video/image/audio copy relationships (e.g., given a video/image/audio, to find all videos/images on the Internet that have the same content with the video/image, either entirely or partially), mining trends of multimedia consuming/sharing, mining knowledge (for example, "photo encyclopedia"", from massive amount of multimedia content on the Internet, etc.

* Web-scale content-based multimedia retrieval (for example, approaches based on large-scale high-dimensional feature indexing).

* Other online multimedia mining applications, such as multimedia advertising, multimedia recommendation, as well as location/GPS/geography-enabled multimedia, multimedia sensor network over the Internet, etc.

Paper Submission

We accept two forms of submissions: regular full papers and demonstrations. Regular submissions for this workshop are required to use the same format as regular ICDM long papers (a maximum of 10 pages in the IEEE 2-column format). And demonstration submission requires a 1- or 2-page demo description. We especially encourage long-paper authors to submit a demo also. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Extended version of selected papers will be invited to submit to a special issue of a top journal in data mining or multimedia area.

Award

The workshop will present two awards: a best paper award and a best demonstration award, judged by a separate awards committee.

Important Dates

  • * August 8 Submission of full paper
  • * August 29 Submission of demo paper
  • * September 8 Notification of Acceptance
  • * September 28 Camera-Ready Paper Due

Second International Workshop on Semantic Aspects in Data Mining (SADM'09)

Second International Workshop on Semantic Aspects in Data Mining (SADM'09)

In conjunction with the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM 2009)
Miami, USA, December 6 - 9, 2009

http://sadm09.isti.cnr.it

Knowledge Discovery is generally described as a process for the automatic extraction of interesting, useful, and previously unknown knowledge from data. It is expected that data characteristics, data semantics as well as the knowledge that already exists about the data can be directly incorporated into the knowledge discovery process. However, semantic and reasoning aspects may intervene in several steps of the discovery process, and now the question is how these aspects interact within the process and the forms that this can take. In data pre-processing, semantic aspects may help in (1) identifying source data of interest, (2) enriching the data with additional domain information, and (3) generating more meaningful and human understandable patterns, once the generated patterns are directly related to the input data. During the mining task, semantics may be used as constraints, thus allowing (1) search space reduction, (2) pattern pruning, and (3) the development of more efficient algorithms. Background knowledge may intervene in the post-processing step helping in the explanation of large amounts of patterns, typically difficult to interpret. The objective of SADM is to introduce methods which can explicitly consider data semantics, background knowledge, or reasoning in the mining process. This knowledge has to be represented/formalized in a knowledge repository, such as ontologies, conceptual schemas, knowledge bases, etc. The main aspect is that this knowledge has to be explicitly incorporated into the KDD process, where the algorithms for data preprocessing, data mining or post-processing make use of this knowledge to improve the KDD process. The key idea is to develop a more general understanding about how to exploit data semantics and background knowledge, and to create standardized procedures for designing more intelligent data mining methods. We believe that such an effort can lead to the development of the science of semantic data mining.

* Journal Special Issue*
The selected Best Paper will be recommended for publication in a special issue of Knowledge and Information Systems (KAIS) journal edited by Springer..

AdMIRe: International Workshop on Advances in Music Information Research 2009

http://www.cp.jku.at/conferences/admire2009/

In Conjunction with the
IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia 2009

San Diego, California, USA
December 14-16, 2009

The International Workshop on Advances in Music Information Research (AdMIRe) 2009
will serve as a forum for theoretical and practical discussions of cutting edge research in
the fields of Web mining for music information extraction, retrieval, and recommendation as
well as in mobile applications and services. Research on multimodal extraction, retrieval,
and presentation with a focus on the music and audio domain is especially welcome.
So are submissions addressing concrete implementations of systems and services by both
academic institutions and industrial companies.

Workshop papers will be official publications of IEEE, which will be included in IEEEXplore
and also be printed as part of the conference proceedings.

Motivation:
-----------
Music information retrieval (MIR) as a subfield of multimedia information retrieval has been
a fast growing field of research during the past decade. In traditional MIR research, music-
related information were extracted from the audio signal using signal processing techniques.
These methods, however, cannot capture semantic information that is not encoded in the audio
signal, but nonetheless essential to many consumers, e.g., the meaning of the lyrics of a
song or the political motivation or background of a singer.

In recent years, the emergence of various Web 2.0 platforms and services dedicated to the
music and audio domain, like last.fm, MusicBrainz, or Discogs, has been providing novel
and powerful, albeit noisy, sources for high level, semantic information on music artists,
albums, songs, and others. The abundance of such information provided by the power of the
crowd can therefore contribute to MIR research and development considerably. On the other
hand, the wealth of newly available, semantically meaningful information offered on Web 2.0
platforms also poses new challenges, e.g., dealing with the huge amount and the noisiness of
this kind of data, various user biases, hacking, or the cold start problem.

Another recent trend, not at last addressable to platforms like Apple's iPhone or Google's
Android, are intelligent user interfaces to access the large amounts of music usually
available on today's mobile music players and the corresponding services. Mobile devices that
offer high speed Web access allow for even more music to be consumed via Web services.
Dealing with these vast amounts of music requires intelligent services on mobile devices that
provide, for example, personalized and context-aware music recommendations. The current
emergence and confluence of these challenges make this an interesting field for researchers
and industry practitioners alike.

Topics of Interest:

CFP - Second International Workshop on Semantic Aspects in Data Mining (SADM 2009)

CFP - Second International Workshop on Semantic Aspects in Data Mining
(SADM 2009)

http://sadm09.isti.cnr.it/PC.html

In conjunction with the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining
(ICDM 2009), Miami, December 6 2009

http://www.cs.umbc.edu/ICDM09

Knowledge Discovery is in general described as a process of automatic extraction of new knowledge from data. However, the characteristics of the data, their semantics, the knowledge that already exists about the data, and the context of the application has rarely been considered in the discovery process. Semantic and reasoning aspects may intervene in several steps of knowledge discovery, but how these aspects interact within the process, and the forms that this can take, is an issue that has been given little attention so far.
Semantics may intervene in the post-processing step, when helping in the explanation of large amounts of patterns, typically difficult to interpret.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers working on all context, semantic and reasoning aspects in Data Mining, developing techniques to embed semantics in the knowledge discovery process, and taking into account ontological and reasoning issues.

CFP: ACM U-NET'09 — User-provided Networking: Challenges and Opportunities

ACM U-NET'09 — User-provided Networking: Challenges and Opportunities
Co-located with ACM CoNEXT 2009
Rome, Italy, December 1, 2009

Submission Deadline: July 17, 2009
Submit at: http://edas.info/N7753

*Motivation*

This workshop is dedicated to the debate of concepts, challenges, and opportunities concerning user-provided networking, i.e., scenarios where users cooperate by sharing wireless resources as well as Internet services.
To provide a specific example that relates to Internet Access (connectivity),
the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive in what concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between what is today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast, the Internet has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of network service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person communication, or information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also disruptive given that the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in order to accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth is the willingness to cooperate.

Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the nature of the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators needs to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking spreads
dynamically having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need to
consider cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed based
on topological information.

Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that such novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely autonomic way and also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based
upon his/her own mobility and social patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily imply the use of multihop technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases, simply relayed.

The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers and a discussion panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a
forum aiming to ignite a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or positively) that user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models.

*Topics*

U-NET'09 solicits high quality technical contributions within the context of
user-provided networking. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Challenges and opportunities for access providers.
* Impact on Internet architectures.
* Internet connectivity.
* Trust models, incentives to share broadband access.
* Human behaviour and mobility patterns.

Papers submitted are expected to be highly innovative and may incorporate early stage ideas; position papers (clearly identified as such) pointing to new directions and capable of generating discussion are also welcome.
Submission must be original and not already published in any other conference proceeding or journal. Proceedings of the workshop will be published in the ACM Digital Library.

*Submissions*

Submitted papers must be at most 6 (six) pages long (including figures,
tables and references) in the standard ACM double column format. All text
must use font sizes of 10 points or larger. Longer submissions will not be reviewed. The review process is single-blind. Submissions will be done via EDAS at http://edas.info/N7753.

* About CloudCom 2009

"Cloud" is a common metaphor for an Internet accessible infrastructure (e.g. data storage and computing hardware) which is hidden from users. Cloud Computing makes data truly mobile and a user can simply access a chosen cloudwith any internet accessible device. In Cloud Computing, IT-related capabilities are provided as services, accessible without requiring detailed knowledge of the underlying technology. Thus, many mature technologies are usedas components in Cloud Computing, but still there are many unresolved and open problems. This conference and workshop series, steered by the Cloud Computing Association ( www.cloudcom.org ), aims to bring together researchers who work on cloud computing and related technologies. Topics include but are not limited to:

* Cloud/Grid architecture
* Load balancing
* Optimal deployment configuration
